Research Assignment

We are beginning a research assignment in which you will be arguing "for" or "against" an issue that interests you. Click "Select a Topic" on the menu to the right, & go to the database "Opposing Viewpoints" to select a main topic. Skim a few "Featured Viewpoint Articles" or "Viewpoint Articles" to examine your stand on the issue. Then, complete the stations below:


Station 1 - Write Your Research Question/ Essential Question:


  1. Use the Brainstorming Chart on your paper to create some good, researchable questions you might use for your research paper/ project.
  2. Circle the Research Question/ Essential Question that you think is the best.

Station 2 - Summarizing, Paraphrasing, & Quoting (from a Video):

  1. When you take notes on a source, you will either summarize, paraphrase, or directly quote what the author is saying.
  2. In this instance, you are practicing all three skills by taking notes on a short video.

Station 3 - Databases:

  1. Go to the GHHS website > Media Center > Media Center Databases.
  2. Click on Database Passwords15. When the gray box pops up, type in the secret password _.
  3. Go to NC WiseOwl > High School Zone > Student Research (top of menu at left).
  4. Because you have already selected a Research Question/ Essential Question in Station 1, you only need to fill out the left-hand column on your paper.

Make sure your names are on all 3 papers & turn in!
